WhatsApp To Charge Businesses Per Message From October 1

Date:

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, will begin charging businesses for certain messages sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform from October 1, 2026.

The new WhatsApp Business pricing policy will affect companies using the official WhatsApp Business Platform, formerly known as the WhatsApp Business API, to manage customer conversations and send messages at scale.

Meta announced the pricing changes in an update to its WhatsApp Business Platform pricing structure, with service messages that were previously free set to become chargeable on a per-message basis from October 1.

The development is expected to affect banks, fintech companies, e-commerce businesses, telecom operators, logistics firms and large retailers that rely heavily on WhatsApp for customer service, payment confirmations, order updates and other transactional communications.

However, ordinary WhatsApp users and most small businesses using the standard WhatsApp Business app on their mobile phones will not be affected by the new charges.

Under the existing system, when a customer sends a message to a business, a 24-hour customer service window is opened.

Businesses can currently respond with free-form service messages and certain utility messages within that period without paying Meta.

From October 1, however, Meta will charge businesses on a per-message basis for service messages sent during the customer service window.

According to Meta’s developer documentation, “Effective October 1, 2026, Meta will charge on a per-message basis for all service messages, consistent with how Meta charges for template messages.”

The company also stated that utility messages sent in response to users within an open 24-hour customer service window would become chargeable from the same date.

Utility messages include payment confirmations, order updates, delivery notifications and other transactional communications.

Meta has also warned businesses and Solution Providers to add a payment method before the new pricing takes effect.

The company said businesses and Solution Providers without a payment method on file by September 30, 2026, risk having their service messages stopped once the new charges take effect on October 1.

For Nigerian businesses, chargeable utility or service messages are expected to cost about $0.0101 per message, equivalent to roughly ₦14 based on an exchange rate of about ₦1,340 to the dollar.

Marketing messages are considerably more expensive, at about $0.062 per message, or approximately ₦84 at the same exchange rate.

The charges represent Meta’s fees and may not be the final amount paid by businesses. Companies that access the WhatsApp Business Platform through Business Solution Providers or third-party platforms may also incur additional provider charges.

For instance, a Nigerian fintech sending 500,000 chargeable utility or service messages at $0.0101 per message would incur about $5,050 in Meta messaging fees alone.

At an exchange rate of ₦1,340 to the dollar, that would amount to approximately ₦6.8m, excluding any additional fees charged by service providers.

Although the cost per message appears relatively small, the financial impact could be substantial for companies sending hundreds of thousands or millions of messages each month.

WhatsApp has become an important communication channel for businesses in Nigeria, with banks and fintech companies using the platform for customer support and transaction-related communication, while e-commerce, logistics and retail businesses rely on it for order updates, delivery notifications and customer engagement.

The latest development is part of Meta’s broader changes to WhatsApp Business pricing, as the company continues to move business messaging towards a per-message pricing model.

From October 1, 2026, previously free service messages and qualifying utility messages sent within an open 24-hour customer service window will become chargeable on the WhatsApp Business Platform.
