Ohanaeze Ndigbo Calls For Probe Into Geregu Power Acquisition, Mining Allegations

Date:

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and relevant security, regulatory, and anti-corruption agencies to conduct what it described as an immediate, transparent, and comprehensive investigation into recent reports concerning strategic asset acquisitions and allegations relating to illegal mining activities involving individuals who have held public office.

In a statement signed by its Deputy President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Deputy Secretary General, Prof. Chibuikeya Achoakawa, the organisation said the matters raised were of significant public interest and required urgent attention to strengthen transparency, accountability, and public confidence in governance institutions.

The group specifically referenced reports surrounding the acquisition of a controlling stake in Geregu Power Plc through Ma’am Energy Limited, noting that the transaction had generated public debate regarding ownership structure, funding sources, and compliance with financial regulations.

It also called for clarification of issues linked to associated corporate entities referenced in public discussions.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo further pointed to recurring concerns and allegations regarding illegal mining activities in parts of Zamfara, Kaduna, and Kebbi States, urging relevant authorities to establish the facts through lawful and independent investigations.

It stressed that allegations alone do not constitute proof, but said such claims should not be ignored where they continue to attract public attention.

According to the organisation, agencies including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), the Code of Conduct Bureau, and relevant legislative committees should undertake a coordinated review of the issues raised, including financial records, asset declarations, and compliance with anti–money laundering regulations where applicable.

The group stated that its intervention was driven by concern for national stability, institutional integrity, and the need to ensure that all allegations are addressed strictly through due process and the rule of law. It added that public confidence in governance could only be sustained where issues of this nature are properly examined and resolved.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo called for the immediate commencement of a credible and independent investigation and urged that the process be communicated transparently by relevant authorities.

It further stated that failure to take clear steps within fourteen (14) days of its statement would leave it with no option but to explore lawful judicial remedies, including public interest litigation aimed at compelling institutional action.

The organisation emphasised that its position should not be interpreted as an accusation against any individual, but rather as a civic demand for accountability and clarity in matters of significant public concern.
