Glasgow 2026: Powerlifter Idris Wins Team Nigeria’s Third Gold Medal

Riluwan Idris has won Team Nigeria’s third gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, claiming the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting title with a massive 208kg lift in Glasgow on Friday.

Competing at a body weight of just 86kg, Idris scored 132.8 points to edge out England’s Matthew Harding, who lifted 199kg to score 131.0 points and take Silver.

Malaysia’s Nicodemus Moses completed the podium with 120.3 points to win Bronze.

Meanwhile, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Rita Ferdinand were unstoppable in the women’s Heavyweight Powerlifting, breaking World Records to win gold and silver medals respectively for Nigeria.

Idris’ feat means Team Nigeria has won six medals just on Day One of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
